How prepared do you think you are as a Quarterback prior to a regular or post-season game? What letter grade would you assign yourself, when considering both your preparation and readiness? These are good questions to consider, especially at a moment where routine off-season football activities are mostly halted.

Once you have answered the questions raised above, it might be useful to turn your attention to coming up with a new in-season preparation routine and begin practice it. If you ready to do so, consider these things you could be doing right now to get better:

1. Determine Priorities – Figure out what handful of items are most important for you to know about an upcoming opponent. You can determine this based on what your Offensive coaching staff typically asks of you and what pre-snap or practice week reads or cues do not come naturally to you. Make a list of game week preparation priorities for yourself. Do not be shy about asking your coach for guidance and input. There is a good chance your coach will impressed with the initiative you are taking.

2. Practice Scouting on Film – Get some film to practice your scouting. Ask your coach for upcoming opponent film or even pick a team you do not have on your schedule (a future opponent would obviously be preferable). Take some time to identify base defensive fronts, coverages, blitzes, and personnel. Make notes for each of these details and establish some familiarity with the opponent. If you are new to this, you will discover a confidence that comes from being well-prepared for what an opposing defense does.

3. Document Your Scouting Report – Simply type up your notes, create a scouting report of your own (based on the priorities you identified before), or ask your coach for a template to document what you have found about your future opponent.

Use your quarantine time wisely! Get better every way possible.
